The University of Southern Califonia slugger Mark McGuire broke into the majors with the bash boys of the Oakland Athletics, and went on to hit 583 homers in an illustrious 16-year career. In 1998 he hit a record-setting 70 taters, dueling with Sammy Sosa and breaking Roger Maris' record of 61 set in 1961.
